What is Data?
Data is simply information that's been recorded, numbers, text, images, locations, transactions. On its own it doesn't mean much. The value comes from organising it, analysing it, and turning it into something useful.
South African example: Every time someone taps their bank card at Shoprite, swipes a MyCiti bus card in Cape Town, or applies for a SASSA grant, that's data being created. Companies and government use that data to understand what's happening, which stores need more stock, which routes need more buses, which areas need more support.
A career in data means being the person who collects, cleans, analyses or builds systems around this information.
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is when computers are trained, using large amounts of data, to perform tasks that normally require human thinking: recognising patterns, making predictions, understanding language, or making recommendations.
For high school and university students: Think of the algorithm that decides what shows up on your TikTok "For You" page, or the chatbot your bank uses when you message them online. Both are AI systems trained on huge amounts of data.
AI doesn't replace the need for data skills, it depends on them. Every AI system needs people who understand data first.
